Universal
Postal Union Member Data
The Universal Postal Union (UPU) was formed in 1874 and is the primary means
of cooperation between postal services of all the nations of the world.
A typical Congress where delegates meet and discuss membership, postal problems,
etc. has over 1,000 delegates for the 189 member nations. This alphabetical
listing of member nations with the date of joining the UPU, leaving, and/or
change of names due to various reasons may be the first of its kind outside
of the UPU itself. It has been taken from UPU documents, and will be updated
as conditions change for the various postal administrations due to their
nation losing or winning a war, or any other possibility.
[WEBMASTER: Extensive updating to this listing courtesy of Ben Cahoon. See his work at www.Worldstatesmen.org.]
Here are some key happenings of past years.
- A political system may change, such as Russia becoming the USSR, but
the original dates of membership remain.
- Once a member of the UPU, the nation will always remain a member,
even if they don’t pay their dues.
- No nation has ever stated “I Quit the UPU.”
- South Africa was expelled due to apartheid by a 1979 UPU Congress,
but was immediately readmitted since the nation is a member of the United
Nations Organization, and any member of the UNO is automatically a member
of the UPU.
- Until 1971, the Republic of China (Taiwan) was considered the representative of China for the UNO and the UPU,
before continental China existed for the UPU. When continental China
became a member of the UNO, Taiwan “disappeared” and this
country is now considered a “China province” on UPU records.
